A beautiful diamond ring rich in history and charm. What makes this ring special is that it contains two different antique diamond cuts: rose and table cut diamonds.


Rose-cut diamonds were first developed in the 1500s and became popular partly due to advances in candle-making. As candles became more readily available, diamonds with facets that shimmered and sparkled in candlelight were highly sought after. Rose cut diamonds ruled the roost during the Georgian era (1714-1837) and remained popular during the Victorian era (1837-1901).

Table-cut diamonds are a rare cut, particularly popular with collectors and antique lovers. The oldest examples of this cut are found in medieval Islamic jewellery from the 13th century, which are often set with table cut diamonds. In ancient times, it was believed that diamonds possessed magical powers and protected their wearer from mischief, but lost this power if their natural pyramidal shape was altered. As a result, diamonds in those days were often "point-cut," with only the facets being polished.

The table cut, a later development, is characterised by minimally worked diamonds with a polished point and polished sides and upper facets (the table). This rare cut is beautifully reflected in this ring, visible at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions, as well as on one side of the shin.
